The English Language section tests the candidates’ proficiency in English, including vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and comprehension.

Part 1: Combined Preliminary Examination (पूर्व परीक्षा)

In the Prelims, the English section is generally clubbed with Marathi (around 15-20 questions combined out of 100) under the General Ability Test. The difficulty level is typically Class 12th/Graduation.

Part 2: Combined Mains Examination (मुख्य परीक्षा – Paper 1)

The Mains exam dedicates a significant portion of Paper 1 to the English Language, with a difficulty level of Graduation. The questions are objective (MCQ) type.

I. Grammar (व्याकरण)

This section requires a thorough understanding of the rules of English Grammar.

  1. Parts of Speech: Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Interjections.
  2. Tenses: Correct usage of various Tenses (Present, Past, Future) and their forms.
  3. Articles: Definite (The) and Indefinite (A/An) Articles and their application.
  4. Voice: Transformation between Active Voice and Passive Voice.
  5. Speech: Transformation between Direct Speech and Indirect Speech.
  6. Punctuation: Correct use of punctuation marks.
  7. Subject-Verb Agreement: Rules for matching the subject with the verb (Concord).
  8. Conditional Sentences: Usage of ‘If’ clauses and different conditions (Type 0, 1, 2, 3).
  9. Degree of Comparison: Transformation of sentences using Positive, Comparative, and Superlative degrees.
  10. Error Detection & Sentence Correction: Identifying grammatical errors in sentences and correcting them.

II. Vocabulary (शब्दसंग्रह)

This tests the candidates’ depth of knowledge regarding English words and their usage.

  1. Synonyms & Antonyms: Words with similar and opposite meanings.
  2. Idioms and Phrases: Meanings and correct usage in sentences.
  3. One Word Substitution: Replacing a phrase or clause with a single word.
  4. Homophones & Homonyms: Words that sound alike but have different meanings/spellings.
  5. Spelling: Identifying correctly and incorrectly spelled words.
  6. Prefixes and Suffixes: Understanding how they change the meaning of root words.

III. Comprehension and Usage (आकलन आणि उपयोग)

This section focuses on reading, understanding, and manipulating text.

  1. Reading Comprehension (Passage): Answering questions based on a given unseen passage.
  2. Sentence Structure/Transformation: Combining and transforming sentences without changing their core meaning.
  3. Cloze Test: Filling in the blanks in a passage with appropriate words.
  4. Para Jumbles/Sentence Arrangement: Arranging jumbled sentences to form a coherent paragraph.
